Angela Bassett (Gunpowder Milkshake, Black Panther) is joining the cast of the Netflix film, Damsel, which already has Stranger Things’ Millie Bobby Brown attached.
According to Deadline, Bassett will be playing Lady Bayford, the stepmother to Brown’s character, the presumed damsel, Elodie. Bassett has recently finished shooting on Black Panther 2: Wakanda Forever, and also recently wrapped her fifth season on the Fox show, 9-1-1.
The premise of the movie appears to be a twist on the damsel-in-distress trope. The story revolves around a young princess who finds out she’s going to be sacrificed to the realm’s local cave dragon instead of getting married to the dreamy Prince Henry. The princess keeps waiting for someone to save her until she realizes that if she wants to be saved, she’ll have to save herself.
Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later) is on board to direct. Dan Mazeau, whose previous credits include Wrath of the Titans and the upcoming Ninja Viking (yes, there is a movie in the works titled Nina Viking), wrote the script. Mazeau and Brown are also executive producers on the project along with Zack Roth, Chris Castaldi, and Sue Baden-Powell
No news yet on when the film will go into production or when we’ll be able to watch it on Netflix.
Well I was hoping Ms. Bassett would play either a knight or a dragon – one could not quite decide which – but Wicked Stepmother could do the business; I’ll be disappointed if she isn’t a Wicked Queen, at least! (-;
